Janice Housey has over 15 years of experience as an intellectual property attorney. Her practice includes counseling clients regarding the protection of trademarks, trade dress, domain names and copyrights. She advises emerging companies and established businesses in all aspects of trademark law; she clears marks, prepares Trademark Office filings, assists in brand name development and protection strategies, and counsels in trademark infringement matters and domain name issues. As part of this practice, she routinely conducts audits of intellectual property portfolios and clients' web sites. In addition, Ms. Housey drafts and reviews a variety of agreements, including software and trademark licenses, and end user consent and settlement agreements. Through strategic global relationships with local counsel, Ms. Housey manages clients' worldwide trademark portfolios.
Ms. Housey's practice includes:
Preparing, filing and prosecuting trademark applications in the United States and coordinating the same abroad
Preparing, filing and prosecuting copyright applications in the United States
Litigation counseling, domain name disputes and handling all aspects of contentious trademark matters before the United States Trademark Trial and Appeal Board and coordinating such efforts abroad
Searching, clearing and enforcing client's trademark and copyright rights Negotiating and drafting license agreements
Prior to joining Latimer, Mayberry & Matthews IP Law, Ms. Housey was Of Counsel to Roberts Mlotkowski & Hobbes. Prior to that Ms. Housey was associated with Foley & Lardner and Piper, Marbury, Rudnick & Wolfe. At each of these firms Ms. Housey developed her intellectual property practice with an emphasis on trademark, copyright and domain name issues.
In addition to her prosecution and licensing background, Ms. Housey has represented clients in oppositions, cancellations and appeals in over 100 proceedings before the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board and has represented clients in trademark infringement cases in various district courts. Recently, Ms. Housey achieved successful results for clients in more than 50 domain name dispute proceedings under ICANN's Uniform Dispute Resolution Policy.
As an active member of the International Trademark Association, Ms. Housey currently serves as the Vice Chair of the INTA Bulletin Committee with responsibility for editing the association's bi-monthly publication to members. Ms. Housey is licensed to practice in Virginia and the District of Colombia and is also admitted to practice before the Eastern, and Western Districts of Virginia, the District Court for the District of Colombia, and the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. Ms. Housey received a B.A. in International Relations from Bucknell University and received her J.D. from The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C.
